The deal is researchers, who are often financed in part or fully with public funds, often building upon unrestricted prior published work and supported by society in general, write a paper. They
give the articles to the publisher for free so that the private publisher, Elsevier, can get richer
charging researchers and others exorbitant rent to read the articles, placing restrictions on the prior unrestricted reference data used to build a paper and maintain its restrictive, stifling system. Sustainable open access publishing models exist and should be encouraged. Academic journal publishing reform is required now in the era of the disruptive, knowledge liberating tool, the internet.
